New Delhi: The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear several petitions challenging the Centre’s decision to repeal most of the provisions of Article 370 of the Constitution granting special status to Jammu and Kashmir. These petitions have been filed in Jammu and Kashmir demanding the removal of other restrictions including restrictions on communication. Indeed, restrictions on communication are becoming a hindrance to the professional duties of journalists.
The petition against the decision to repeal Article 370 has been filed by advocate ML Sharma, while National Conference MP Mohammad Akbar Lone and Justice (retd) Hasnain Masoodi have challenged the changes in the constitutional status of Jammu and Kashmir by the Center. Former IAS officer Shah Faisal, JNU alumni Shehla Rashid and eminent personalities like Radha Kumar are among others.
CPI (M) leader Sitaram Yechury has also filed a petition seeking to present his party’s leader Mohammad Tarigami, who has been detained by the authorities. All matters related to Article 370 and subsequent developments are listed for hearing before a bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi.
