Navratri, the sacred festival of Maa Durga, celebrated in Hinduism, is celebrated with great pomp in different corners of the country. It is believed that meat, fish, eggs and onion-garlic are not consumed during the nine days of Navratri. During these nine days a satvic meal is done, which includes eating fruits, vegetables, poultry flour, sabudana, samak rice, dairy products and rock salt during the nine-day fast of Navratri. According to Ayurveda:

According to Ayurveda, foods can be divided into three categories, depending on their nature and the reaction triggered in the body after their consumption. In which these three categories are-

  • Royal food
  • Vindictive food
  • Satvik food

Apart from being a religious aspect behind having satvik food during fast or fast, there is a scientific reason as well. Sharad Navaratri falls in the month of October – November, which is considered the transition period from autumn to winter season. During this time the body’s resistance decreases due to seasonal changes. Thus, switching to satvik food in this season gives your digestion a little rest and helps in clearing all the impurities in your body.

What are Satvik Food?

Satvik means pure, natural, important, clean and energetic. This is the reason why satvic food helps to remove impurities in your body and keep you energetic. Satvik food includes fresh fruits, curd, rock salt, some spices, black pepper, coriander and seasonal vegetables.

Rajasic and Vengeful food

Rajasic and Tamasic food is considered unholy and destructive. During Navratri, there is a tradition of adopting a pure and simple life for nine days. Eating rajasic and tamasic foods during this time distracts you. Because they include tea, coffee, cold drinks, meat, fish, garlic, onion, egg, wine, mushrooms.

Why Onion and Garlic are left in Navratri?

Onion and garlic are considered vindictive in nature and are said to transmit energy to the body. Onion also produces heat in the body and hence it is celebrated in Navratri. Also, it is believed that garlic along with onions make your brain dull. In addition, onions and garlic affect a person’s consciousness by promoting passion, passion and ignorance.
