Galaxy Home is Samsung’s smart speaker with its virtual assistant Bixby. It was introduced in August 2018.
Designed as a stereo replacement, the Galaxy Home fulfills a role similar to that of competing products, Apple HomePod, Google Home Max and Sonos speakers.
A Smart Speaker from Samsung
The Galaxy Home was announced for the first time at Samsung’s Unpacked event in New York City. The home speaker was shown on the stage and then the audience was shown, but the specific details of the speaker were not released and the device was not given time.
Galaxy Home has a distinctive look with a black body that contains omnidirectional tweeters, which rests on three metal legs. The appearance of the speaker has been compared to things like a glass of wine and a barbecue grill.
Spotify was promoted as the main music service, deeply integrated into the Galaxy Home. For example, in the future, users who listen to music through Spotify can switch from a Samsung phone to a Samsung TV or to the Galaxy Home.
It is unclear if more music services will be included natively on the speaker beyond Spotify. Apple HomePod uses Apple Music exclusively, while the speakers of Google Home Max and Sonos are compatible with multiple music services directly.
Galaxy Home, however, will support “casting” music for the speaker, which will help open it to other music services, similar to how HomePod works with AirPlay.
Bixby is the Virtual Assistant built into Galaxy Home
Along with music, the other main component of Galaxy Home is its voice-controlled virtual assistant, Bixby. The Galaxy Home incorporates eight microphones to help Bixby with advanced understanding and understanding.
We know that Bixby is able to manage device settings, phone calls, text messages, weather, reminders and more compatible phones, so it would make sense to see that the same functionality appears on your speaker as well.
