The mainstream media conveniently ignored a key piece of information shared by MoS External Affairs VK Singh in the Parliament yesterday. The minister pointed out that the recent “order passed by the United States to designate Hizbul chief Syed Salahuddin as a ‘global terrorist’ didn’t for the first time refer to Kashmir region as Indian-Administered Kashmir, as they usually do.
The minister shared this information while responding to some questions by a member of the house on the subject.
The minister said:
On June 26, during the visit of the Prime Minister to the US, the Department of State designated Syed Salahuddin, leader of the militant group Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT).
The media note issued by the State Department in this regard on that date had interalia stated
“Under Salahuddin’’s tenure as senior HM leader, HM has claimed responsibility for several attacks, including the April 2014 explosives attack in India-administered Jammu and Kashmir, which injured 17 people”
On June 29th, the Ministry’s Spokesperson reiterated its stand that all of Kashmir was an integral part of India. The matter was also taken up with the US. The media note issued by the US was then edited to replace “Indian Administered Kashmir” with ‘State of Jammu and Kashmir.”
Modi-haters will definitely think of it as something insignificant but talk to anyone in diplomatic circles and they will tell you just how big a shift it is in US’s stance on Indo-Pak conflict. It vindicates India’s stand.
